This was in 1956, I was a dental technician and served on temporary duty at NAS Chincoteague, Virginia until my release from active duty on April 18, 1958. I never flew with my squadron as we had no permanent facilities to perform dental procedures. I lived on the Island of Chincoteague. In September 2002 I made a trip back to visit that area with an old friend Luke Miller, Personalman 2nd. Class. He too was stationed at NAS Chincoteague, Virginia at the same time as I. We had a great time. It was unbelieveable the changes made to the island of Chincoteague. NAS Chincoteague, Virginia was turned over to NASA a year after we left. I served at the Dental Department with Dr. James B. Edwards who became the governor of South Carolina and then Secratary of Energy for President Reagan. I came into the Navy with prior service in the North Carolina National Guard. I was a buck Sgt. and came into the Navy as A1c. Made ADR3 while at NAS Chincoteague, Virginia. Lived in Pocomoke City with my bride (47 yrs). I am proud to let you know that I served with Old "Pappy" Robert L. Nansteel. He taught me alot and I respected him then as I do now. We are e-mail buddies and I still ask him for advice now & then. I got out of the Navy and enlisted in the Air Force (???) ain't figured that one out yet! It's been many years since FASRON-121 but I remember alot of good times there and working down at Power Plants. I remember a few names. Ronnie Greenly, Avery, J.O Tate Chief Bridges, a Crafton from Texas, Eugene Lux, & who could ever forget Chico Morales.Art Morey from Chelsi Vermont, Commander Johnson ( on who I dashed a cup of coffee) Threw it out the man hole door and he just happened to walk by. I left FAETULANT in October 1960 for VP-9 at NAS Alameda, California where I was in Crew #6. I reenlisted for AT "B" school and from there to VP-50 in NAS Iwakuni, Japan. LENNON, AK2 Jack johnljoanl@aol.com "...I was stationed at NAF Annapolis, Maryland immediately upon graduation from Great Lakes in August of 1950. We served on PBM5-A's and JRF grumman gooses. We also had a bunch of N3N yellow perils. This was in 1950-1952 time frame. I had a lot of good times and served with a lot of great guys; was even married at the Naval Station Chapel and we had our first boy (one of 7) born at the Naval Academy; so, a lot of fond memories still exist. Too bad they had to close it and I understand that they tore down the radio towers; I used to enjoy going up at night on the flight deck of the USS Block Island (our barracks at the time) and seeing the 12 or so blinking on and off lights on giant Xmas trees. Then there were the duty boat rides across the Severn River; our liberty launches taking us on a well earned respit after a long day of launching and retreiving the N3N aircraft entertaining the Midshipmen; trying to entice them into becoming Naval Aviators. From there I was ordered to Oceana Virginia and joined FASRON-121 who was about to deploy (in LST's) to Vieques. I beleive VP-7 and VP-11 did several training weeks with us. What an interesting job that was, hitting the beach with field packs, and living in tents like a bunch of junglebunnies. It was about a 90 day tour. We then packed up (now late 1953) and we deployed to NAS Chincoteague, Virginia. I left the squadron around late June or July and was discharged in August 1954..." I was best known as PAPPY NANSTEEL, my given name is Robert L. Nansteel ADCS(AC) U.S.N. Ret.. retired from VP-24 in May of '79 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. At retirement I had logged 12,000+ total flight hrs. 5,000+ hrs. in P-3B/C A/C,, 3,000+ hrs.in C-130E A/C, 2,200+ hrs. in P2V-7 A/C, 1,200+ hrs. in C-118 A/C, Instructor/Examiner qualified in all of them. The remainder of flight time in various naval aircraft (i.e, UF-1, AD-5W, F3D-2T2, R4D, JRF-4, SNB/JRB-5, etc.) and a few others I'd just as soon forget. All of them however were single wingers. My naval duties were as follows: Great Lakes Boot Co. # 389, OCT. '48--NAS Flight Operations, NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. JAN.'49--VF-921/84 OCT.'51 with cruises on the U.S.S.
