Memorial Picture "...ALBENZI, AT2 Angelo...To all who knew AT2 Angelo Albenzi who served with VP-24 as an IFT from 1977 to 1979 and was searching for those of the squadron that served with him. After avionics training at NATTC Memphis, Tennessee from 1975-1976, he went for additional training VP-30 NAS Jacksonville, Florida, 1976-1977 and became attached to VP-24 as IFT, AT2, from 1977-1979. From there to NADU, 1979-1981. Angelo fought a good fight, from the very beginning when he was diagnosed with cancer as a child. He managed to stay free from it almost until the end. Angelo went on after his service to obtain a B.A.in Accounting from PennState University and worked in the field until his late 30's. It was about that time that I think the cancer had probably started to come back, but he was unaware of ti until about 2 years prior to his death. Angelo died in June of 2003. I knew him for the past 13 years and would be happy to relate details of his life to any of his former crewmembers and comrades that are interested. I hope that some of you were able to contact him from his posting on this site prior to his death. God bless is soul and may he finally rest in peace...B. Brown bhayesbr@aol.com..." [24AUG2004]

ALBERTS, CDR Paul "Mayor of Olongapo" paul.alberts@patinsurance.com "...I served as a In-Flight Tech (AX) with VP-22 from 1972 to 1975 and VP-90 NAS Glenview, Illinois. I was eventually selected for LDO and served with the reserves out of Great Lakes,IL (NARA) with NS Rota, Spain as Training Officer. Oh yes - earned the title in the Philippines on early tours with VP-90 just after leaving VP-22. Since my active time in PI allowed me to become VERY familiar with all the important areas, the green-horns of VP-90 couldn't ask a question about who-what-where while in PI without an answer. It prompted the comment: "Who are you...the goddam mayor of Olongapo?" Needless to say, it became a permanent title that still lives on today. And yes... one day "I will return"... back to the mother land! I am currently a CDR with the reserves at Rock Island, IL (USPACOM DET 216). I must confess to many terrific voyages to both the Pacific and Med. Just can't get enough - and I continue to look for more opportunities - especially in WestPac. My best to all my former Shipmates, and those that made serving not just a job, but a true adventure...." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 14SEP2004 | 20SEP97]

ALDEA, Mike aldeam@aptea.com "...I served with VP-44 from 1971 through 1974. I worked in the Tron Shop with Jesse Castillo and Ty Greeves. The thing I remember most about the squadron were all the guys hidding long hair underneath the wigs they wore with their ball caps. Also the big drug bust in Rota as we ended the deployment in 1972. I managed to join and leave the squadron without ever having any of the normal interviews with the CO. Also managed to get my "crow" without the normal ceremony in front of the squadron. Only time I got caught having to wear a dress uniform was for a NAS Bermuda Change-of-Command ceremony while we were deployed there. My best memory is the 36 hour liberty hop I got to go on to Amsterdam from NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. Considering VP-44's history I'm surprised the Navy didn't choose other squadrons to decommission instead..." [12JUN2000]

I have a photo of his crew taken at NAS Alameda, California in 1943 that includes my father and LT(jg) A.L. Macauley, ENS N.H. McDade, as well as others identified only by last names: Baxter, Jenson, Sunquist, Mullens, Scribner, Clark, Widener, and Mizenko; will try to post this photo. I also have my father's Aviators Flight Log Book listing nearly 150 flights from March 1944 to July 1945, mostly in the PBM-3D. Patrols appear to be mostly from Eniwetok and Saipan and include missions over then-Japanese held Wake and Ponape islands, and in March 1945 over Chichi Jima and to within 100 miles of the Japanese coast. VPB-19 won a Unit Citation for operating from an open roadstead off Iwo Jima in March 1945, and the first use of JATO in a combat area. We also have an address from the Captain of USS Hamlin (AV-15) dated 18 Feb 45 (the day before the landings at Iwo). The Hamlin, in conjuction with Seaplane Tenders USS Chincoteague (AVP-24) and USS Williamson (AVP-15) (Picture), was to establish a seadrome, which would then be occupied by planes of VPB-19 and VH-2 flown up from Saipan. The Captain said "We are fortunate in having assigned to us for this operation an excellent squadron, VPB-19. They have a fine reputation and are raring to go." Although my father passed away in 1993, I am interested in any additional info on the wartime exploits of VPB-19, and also in hearing from any VPB-19 veterans from that era or their families..."
