Joe Pedigo was PPC; Ensign Smith, PP1P; "Blackie" DeLorme, Plane Captain; Mike Snyder, radio; Gus Alagna, ECM; Lew Stepka, ordnance; Glenn Hillegass, 2nd radio. Lt. Joe was a great plane jockey. I remember those rocket runs off Block Island near NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and the sonobuoy sub hunts in the Atlantic. Our deployment to NAS Iwakuni, Japan was a real operational challenge to us. Patrols to Port Arthur to survey shipping to the North, sub hunts in the Yelow Sea, patrols along the Korean coast as far as Vladivostok, and cover for Task force 77.7 during replenishment, searching for displaced North Korean and Chinese troops from their POW camps in the south that were turned loose by Singman Rhee. Flew every fourth day or nite. Being 19 yrs old at the time was pretty excitying duty. We lost two planes: one ditched just south of Korea and all but one crew member was saved. Lt. Commander Essex didn't make it. Sad. Also our hanger queen slammed into a mountain in a landing attempt at NAS BARBER,s Point, Hawaii on the way home to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Still see those buddies in my mind and will forever. Would love to hear from anyone from those great days!..." [28MAR2000]

After our sea trials, we left NAS North Island, San Diego, California aboard the USS Princeton on November 2 for our Far East Cruise. During this cruise we were sent off the coast of Formosa during the evacuation of the Tachen Islands by the Nationalist Chinese where we kept our AF's operating around the clock for about a week. When we returned to the States on May 31, 1955, VS-37 was again assigned to NAS North Island, San Diego, California. In April 1956, I was transferred to VS-23 and was an air crewmember in the S2F's during its cruise aboard the USS Boxer from July 1956 until, I believe, January 1957. The squadron was transferred to NAS Los Alamitos, California and to my memory, we were the only "regular" Navy squadron on the base at that time. I flew a few anti-sub missions with P-3 squadrons which where stationed there on a rotational basis. This was much fun especially since we were actively tracking combloc submarines and surface vessels. My skipper was CAPT. Leo V. Rabuck who flew a Grumman C1. I enjoyed watching that piston banger crank up, spewing large clouds of purple smoke but it was even better when he sought out volunteer crew members to maintain his flight hours. I loved going up in that beast! I was also a member of the Security Police augmentee force. We trained with US Air Force, Army, Portuguese Army and Air Force personnel. I got to be a crack shot with the M16, earning both an expert rifle and an expert pistol ribbon. I made many friends with the locals since I spoke fair to middlin Portuguese and I made friends with other servicemen that I still maintain today. Spent time in NAS Iwakuni, Japan, NAS BARBER,s Point, Hawaii, NAS Adak, Alaska, NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone. During the the Cubian Missle crisis, our crew was sent to NAS Norfolk, Virginia. They took 6 crews from the Pacific Fleet and 6 from the Atlantic Fleet. They combined us together (all P2V-Neptunes) and called us "Task Group Delta." (I have a patch around here somewhere). We went prowling along the Cuban coast and came up with a strange reading on our gear. Our crew, believe it was VP-19 Crew 1 at the time, made the first contact and readouts of the first Russian Nucelar submarine. It was in the newspapers approx. 6 months later. This was when the Pentagon and Rickover were saying the soviets were 2+ years behind us. Also, VP-19 changed over to the P-3A's during this time. I ended up going to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland for 3 months..." [BIO/E-Mail Updated 21FEB99]

BAKER, James E. jmlbaker@nemonet.com "...THIS IS ALL NEW TO ME AND I AM LEARNING HOW TO USE IT SO FORGIVE MY IGNORANCE ON COMPUTER OPERATION (served in VP-40 from 1958 to 1961). AS I RECALL, I WAS WITH A DRAFT OF ABOUT FIVE OTHER MEN THAT ARRIVED IN THE P.I. EARLY IN 1958. THE SQUADRON HAD ALREADY DEPLOYED AND THE PLANES & CREWS,ETC. WERE ALREADY THERE. I THINK THE FOLLOWING DAY I WAS SENT WITH SOME CREW OUT ON A FAMILIARIZATION PATROL(I GUESS THAT'S WHAT IT WAS). I HAVE ONLY ONE RECOLLECTION OF THAT FLIGHT. I WAS GIVEN A LITTLE (HANDHELD) CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND TOLD TO GET UP IN THE HATCH NEXT TO THE APU AND WATCH FOR ENGINE FIRE AT START-UP. AS SOON AS THEY FIRED THEM UP, I LOST MY HAT. TO THIS DAY I DON'T KNOW IF MY LEG WAS BEING PULLED OR NOT. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT GOOD I COULD HAVE DONE IF THERE HAD BEEN A FIRE OR THAT I WOULD HAVE BEEN DUMB ENOUGH TO TRY TO PUT IT OUT WITH THAT LITTLE CO2 BOTTLE. I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE IGNORANT YOUTH THAT I WAS. AT SOME POINT SHORTLY AFTER THAT I GOT THE PLEASURE OF GOING MESSCOOKING. I, WAS A VETERAN OF THAT MEMORABLE DUTY, HAVING DONE IT IN BOOTCAMP, NAS Memphis, Tennessee, AND TREASURE IS., CA. BUT, WHEN I SAY PLEASURE, I REALLY MEAN THAT. I HAD MUCH BETTER DUTY AND LIBERTY THAN THOSE LEFT IN THE SQUADRON. IN FACT, IT WAS SO GOOD THAT I VOLUNTEERED FOR AN ADDITIONAL NINETY DAYS OF IT. THAT TOOK US UP TO THE TIME FOR ROTATION BACK TO NAS North Island, San Diego, California FOR A YEAR. I DIDN'T REALIZE THERE WAS A CRUISE BOOK MADE FOR THAT TOUR UNTIL I ATTENDED THE Reunion IN PENSACOLA, FL AND SAW ONE. I GUESS WE WERE THE FORGOTTEN ONES IN THE CHOW HALL. AT SOME POINT IN TIME WHILE IN CA CMDR CLINTON WAS RELIEVED BY CMDR CURTISS AND I WAS ASKED IF I COULD TYPE. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN TO ADMIT THAT BUT IT TURNED OUT WELL. THE GUY WORKING IN THE ELECTRONICS SHOP WANTED OUT AND INTO A FLIGHT CREW AND NEEDED A REPLACEMENT AND I WAS IT. THERE MAY BE SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT WILL RECALL THAT I WORKED THE "TWIDGET" STOREROOM. WHEN THE POWERS THAT BE DECIDED WE SHOULD MAKE NS Sangley Point, Philippines OUR PERMANENT HOME AND ALLOWED OTHERS FROM DIFFERENT SQUADRONS TO TRANSFER INTO VP-40. I PICKED UP A HELPER IN THE STOREROOM. AS IT TURNED OUT HE OUTRANKED ME AND I BECAME HIS HELPER. WE WORKED WELL TOGETHER AND WE STILL EXCHANGE CHRISTMAS CARDS. THAT'S IT FOR NOW. NOW HOW DO I SEND THIS?..." [03NOV98]

OUR DUTY WATCH WAS IN THE JUNGLE AIR STRIPS WHERE WE STOOD WATCH WITH A BROWNING 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN TO PREVENT NATIVES AND POSSIBLE JAPANESE FROM STEALING PARTS FROM OUR BOMBERS. ONE INTERESTING BIT OF HISTORY WAS WHEN WE NEEDED PARTS FOR OUR PLANES, ALL WE DID WAS LOOK FOR THE NEEDEWD PART IN THE PARTS CATALOG (JUST LIKE ORDERING PARTS FROM A SEARS CATALOG). ALL SQUADRON GROUND PERSONNEL BOARDED THE USS SUISON BAY, A CONVERTED DESTROYER AND SET SAIL FOR PEARL. WE ARRIVED IN EARLY 1948 AND WERE IN HANGAR 5. The aircraft we had were UF-1 Albatross and N3N Yellowbird. The N3N was a biplane, open cockpit. You had to hand crank the engine. They used this plane to indoctrinate the midshipmen to flying. My next station was VP-18 NAS Jacksonville, Florida. I first went to NAS Norfolk, Virginia to ASW school then on to Jacksonville. By the time I got there I had about a year left in the Navy. I was on flight crew status during that time. During that year we spent allot of time in the Caribbean (NS Roosevelt Roads, PR). Most of my time was spent on Crew 7 and for some reason I remember the side number 147956. We had two bad incidents, one was when the varacam you know the middle section of the horizontal stabilizer on a P2V went in the full up position. We had a great pilot (LT Mehan or something like that) and he was able to keep the plane in control until the Plane Captain was able to manually bring it back to neutral. Another time when we were taking off from NS Roosevelt Roads, PR and the starboard engine caught fire (exciting time). Some of the crew members were a AT by the name of Gilkerson, Plane Cap Hendrex, ordnance last name was Prince. The Navigator name was LT Arvin and our co-pilot last name was Anderson. In the fall of 1962 I transfered to crew 12 that was assigned to go to South America on Unitas III. Three of the crew members were a AT last name Smith. There were two other AT's by the name of Walter Gearard and Rudy Boatright. We came back early because of the Cuban crises. I was extended in the Navy and was discharged in December 1962. The last month that I was in the Navy we spent a lot of time taking pictures of Russian Ships. I left the Navy as a Aviation Electrician Second Class. Not the end of the story, I reenlisted in February 1963 and thinking I would be sent back to ASW and wound up in a fighter squadran (VF 96) in NAS Miramar, California. After six years and two tours in the Viet Nam area (one on the USS Ranger 1964/65and one on the USS Enterprise 1965/66), I left the Navy in 1969 as a E6. Since then I have been in the telephone world and retired for the second time in 2007 I was 67. Most of my time was spent in the Atlanta area. I now live in Somerset KY..." I still have them and hopefully one day will give them to my grandson as a memento. Really did like NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. The town was Lexington Park. Understand after 39 years it is not the same. NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada was something else. We deployed there every 28 days for 14 days and flew our barrier flights. When we weren't flying we spent a lot of time at the movies and the NCO club and the chow hall. Wasn't too much else to do there. Remember the two hills acroos the bay "Mae West" as they were called. I believe we all recall that these times spent, sometimes under difficult conditions still remain our best years. Who can forget those 11 hour patrols in Poopie suits, with the only relief for internal air coming out of the plexi neck brace. My first crew position, a green AEAN flying in CDR McKinney's ZE-1 out of NAS Kodiak, Alaska, NAS Adak, Alaska and AF Shemya, and unloading our garbage bags on the iced in Ruskie fishing trawlers. Or, was that on our second tour in LCDR Child's ZE-5 that took us up around Pt. Barrow to become "Blue Noses" and those unforgettable ATC talk downs to no seeum runway approaches into NAS Adak, Alaska and AFB Shemya. Especially exciting when they were ready to scramble the "Sky King" Tankers! Coming home with a Bombay full of cooked King Crab legs. Then our great deployments in Crew-5 (Ole Yellar) 1964 to NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan, 1965 to NAS Iwakuni, Japan with detachments twice to Taiwan, remember the continuous Monopoly game as "Ready Crew", twice to frigid AF Sapporo, Japan and who can forget our stay in the 5 Star Bien Hoa Hotel , I believe three times. Bami Bam (33), Pomme Frites and Buffalo Steaks, all on our Per Diem of course. How about drain holes in the Maintenance tent courtesy of a M-14 or, hanging with the AT's in the A/C cooled trailers. "Xin Loi" (Sorry about that) said the side of ZE-5 as we cruised down and around Nam, looking for the bad guys.
