Memorial Picture "...D'ARCY, Ernest...My Grandfather, Ernest D'Arcy, served aboard the USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14) during WWII. If any of his shipmates are here, I just want you to know he lived a great life after the service, fathering 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren. He was as awesome a grandfather as anyone could ask for. He died in 1993 of heart failure. He remained in great physical shape, it was sudden. I am greatly indebted to all of you who served our country. Thank You...Sean M. Ginnetty sginnetty@yahoo.com..." Memorial Picture "...DAMISCH, LCDR Mark...Loss of a Shipmate - This is a short fused notice regarding the death on Sunday, October 12th, 2003 of Mark Damisch, LCDR, USNR. Mark had been practicing for an upcoming aeorbatic competition planned for next week in Warrenton, VA. No further reports regarding the cause of the crash. Mark's first tour was in a VP squadron from NAS Brunswick, Maine. He then reported to VT-28 as a flight instructor in 1992 where I first met him as the Commanding Officer of VT-28. He was an outstanding IP, first class gentlemen and sharp as a tack especially in software development and IT, which is the line of work he chose to pursue after leaving active duty. He worked for a small company here in the DC area. Mark was not married. Following active duty Mark affiliated with a VP reserve squadron up at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania but I am not sure which squadron. I am asking for any assistance one can provide me concerning getting the word out to some of his old Shipmates from NAS Brunswick, Maine, CCTX or the NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. I am particulary interested in anyone who might know a John Shannon (LT/LCDR not sure) who drilled with Mark up at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Please drop me an email if you can help. Thanks...CAPTAIN Tom Donovan, Retired tdonovan@caci.com [13OCT2003]

After boot at Great Lakes served out my 2 years at NAS Kingsville, Texas. After separation returned to VP-661 and VP-662(1). In November 1961, I was recalled to active duty and the squadron was deployed to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. We were recalled because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Soon after, we were deployed to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to patrol the Windward Passage to search for and photograph Soviet ships carrying missiles. After 5 weeks of daily air operations, our P2Vs (I think we had 12) were spent and needed serious maintance. We returned to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, patched up and commenced training flights. I was rated an Aviation Machinist Mate (ADR)and got an early separation in May 1962. Shortly after I made ADR-3, but was never to resume reserve duty. I was released from duty to attend college and was formerly discharged at the end of my 6-year enlistment in March 1963. I look back on my time with the squadron as good years with good people. Cuba was the highlight. We worked our butts off keeping those planes in the air while just beyond the perimeter fence, Raul Castro's army threatened to invade. That's when we really appreciated our USMC brethern. Today I live in Virginia not far from DC..." [03FEB2010]

Flew with great crew and did liberty with a fine group of buddies from the electronics shack. Moved to radar seat replacing Ed Kilby (listed also in this compendium) when he took a transfer to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Later that year was switched to Crew-10, radar seat, then separated in September. Did my 4 years of required reserve time (weekend warriors) at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania in S2Fs with VS-931. (Stoofs 'cause they had higher BUNOs and less time on the airframes than the P2V-5Fs based at NXX). Spoiled by those low time "iron birds" we had in 1956 and 1957 in VP-11. Stoofs flew lower and slower but had better close-in radar. Wound up getting "shanghai-ed" from VS-931 to VS-935 and recalled to active duty by JFK and McNamara for the Berlin Wall Crisis in October, 1961. Reported to NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania for second tour of active duty four days after I should have been discharged. Deployed for 6 weeks at McCalla Field, Gitmo. DALEY, Bill bill.daley@lmco.com "...Really enjoyed reading about all of the VP Squadrons, especially VP-8. I was in VP-8 from early 1959 to Sept. 1961 and was part of the 10 crew. I was an Electronics Technician and operated most of the ASW equipment. It brought back lots of memories seeing the picture of the P2V flying over the submarine. I was in the front of the plane that day ( Bow I guess ) operating the MAD gear. Have that picture at home in the Family Room. Thanks for the memories. It would be great to make contact with anyone who was on Crew 10, or anyone who was in the squadron during those years. When I left the Navy in early Sept. 1961, I was on my way to College at the U. of Illinois and lost contact with the crew. I heard that some months later, after the squadron have changed from P2V's to P-3's that an accident occurred out over the Atlantic on a training excercise. I heard it was the 10 Crew, many of whom had been extended due to the Berlin Wall Crises. Sure would like some confirmation on that. Again, thanks for the memories... Best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season..." [30NOV98]

I also served in VP-4 from July 1954 to June 1956...I enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and retired in 1970 as an ADR1. My first exposure to VPs was in July 1954. I graduated from B school and got orders to VP-4 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington I got married all in July. I had never heard of Oak Harbour, but anyway it was a beautiful place. I started flying as a 2nd Mech shortly after I got there. We had P2V-5's with 20mm in the nose and tail, and a 50 cal on top. We flew to Fallon for gunnery quals. They had us fireing at a target towed by a JD. We deployed to NAS Iwakuni, Japan in July of 1955. We had a great crew. CDR Woods was the PPC and Chief Pinkey Adams was the Plane Captain. He got orders to shore duty right after we got to japan, so I became the Plane Captain of Crew 7. We flew a lot of patrols off the coast of Russia during the six months we were there. Our big reward was when we were relieved to come home. Our skipper, CDR Davis got us the ok to take the long way home. We had a 12 plane squadron and we staggered the departure 24 hours. Our first stop was NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, then NS Sangley Point, Philippines, then Singapore, and on to Australia where we made three stops. Then we started that long trip home. I don't know how we did it, but we managed to get all 12 planes back to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington on the same day - a miracle. I guess Xmas just being around the corner had something to do with it. I had been married for about a year and a half so my wife and Ii had a great XXmas that year. Came back off leave in January 1956 and we started changing over to the P2V-5F with a J-34 hung under each wing. They sure made a lot of difference on take offs. I left the squadron in June 1956 for shore duty at NAS Memphis, Tennessee. I stayed there for three years and transferred to VP-23 in June 1959, which is another story..." Previously we served aboard two Seaplane Tenders in Lingayen Gulf after arriving from CASU-60. When the second Tender was leaving for the states we asked to be returned to CASU-60. Can you provide any details about VPB-119? My plane was being locked on by radar fire control over the Haiphong/Hanoi area of French Indo-China when I detected it and warned the pilot in time to sweep downward as black flak peppered where we had been. With one sweep of a ship's radar detected, we homed in on a freighter with an aft superstructure and sunk it before we went up a Formosan harbor skimming the water. There were ships all around us but none fired since we were below their deck level. We exited as we entered. I was eventually assigned to VP-5. Towards the end of my enlistment, Pat Carr, a radioman whom I knew in VP-5, called me up and told me to apply for a Field Engineer position with Link Aviation, Inc. I did so and was hired. Great cruises with hard work and fun. Great times playing acey deucey in the shop and fun times when the lights would go out in the hangar. With all that acey deucey playing, Butch Fowler never complained as long as we got our work done and keep the planes "up." Anyhow, he has since become a very able aviator holding an ATP and several types, and owns an aircraft charter/management company having 26 jet aircraft. One of his greatest regrets, aside from leaving his squadron, was never bothering to go to the quatermaster for his G-1 flight jacket. For his birthDAY, I am trying to reconstruct what would have been his jacket. I found a " NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania" patch on eBay, but can't find either a squadron patch or P2V patch. Actually I went directly from BARRONPAC to VP-31 for F/E training prior to checking into VP-6. Myself and ADR1 R. C. Miller were the first P-3 F/Es in VP-6. We brought Buno 150525 back to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, that was our first P-3. I can remember the P2 crewmen climbing out of their aircraft sweating profusely, while we were in air conditioned comfort in the P-3s. I believe that at that time VP-6 was the last VP to fly the P2V-5F aircraft. Any how it was full speed ahead to get ready for a 6 month deployment to NAS Adak, Alaska. We did it and did it well. I left VP-6 in 1967 , went to VR-30 at NAS Alameda, California for one year and then to VP-31 as CNAP F/E evaluator. After a good tour there, I went to VP-19. I joined them in NAS Iwakuni, Japan, in 1971 and left VP-19 in 1977. What a hoot, that was the best squadron in the Navy at that time, at least I think it was. We had a fantastic maintenance department and the CPOs were great. I have many fond memories of VP-19. Would especially like to find out what ever became of AWC Joe Allen. I see so many old Shipmates names in the VP-31 Shipmates listing, many of these were just young petty officers when I was in VP-31 and VP-19, many F/Es that I gave check rides to also. My last VP was in VP-47, it too was a very good squadron. I joined them in NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan in 1978 and retired in 1980. Finished up with 26 years as AFCM.
