UPDATE "...Papers of Lieutenant William O. Needham, 1930-1988..." http://www.history.navy.mil/ar/nov.htm [02OCT2001]

Biographical Note

William O. Needham was born on 20 July 1911 in Ivor, Virginia. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Navy and attended basic training at Hampton Roads Naval Training Station in Virginia. Aviation General Utility training followed at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and in February 1931 he was assigned to Hampton Roads Naval Air Station for duty. From August 1931 to January 1932 Needham attended the Parachute Material School at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey before returning to Hampton Roads.

In April 1932, he completed the Bureau of Navigation's Aviation Machinist's Mate training course. The following year he was reassigned to USS Memphis. Except for a temporary duty assignment at San Diego Naval Air Stationin June 1933, Needham served on Memphis until August 1934. While onboard, he was advanced to the rating of Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class (AMM3). From August 1934 until December 1935, Needham was assigned to USS Marblehead. He was again promoted on 18 November 1935, being appointed AMM2.

Needham returned to shore duty in 1936, first at the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, Rhode Island. From March 1936 until May 1937, he was assigned to Pensacola Naval Air Station in Floridafor Naval Aviation Pilot training. While at Pensacola, his next promotion was approved, and Needham was appointed Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class in March 1937.

Having completed his training and been designated a Naval Aviation Pilot, Needham departed Pensacola in May 1937. He arrived at the San Diego Receiving Ship the following month, en route to duty with Patrol Squadron Five in the Panama Canal Zone.

Needham spent nearly four years with various patrol squadrons, serving in Patrol Squadron 33 and Patrol Squadron 54 after leaving Patrol Squadron Five in July 1939. In June 1940, while assigned to Patrol Squadron 33, he was advanced to the rating of Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate.

Beginning in 1941, Needham had duty with Support Force, Atlantic Fleet. Now an Acting Warrant Machinist, he was ordered to USS Prairie in May. Reassigned to Task Force 24 in March 1942, his appointment as a warrant officer was confirmed in June of that year. The following month, he was promoted to the rank of Ensign for temporary service.

His assignment to USS Prairie ended in December 1942, and Needham reported to Anacostia Naval Air Station in Washington, DC. On 1 May 1943 he was appointed Lieutenant (jg) for temporary service, and just 17 days later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Well thought-of by his superiors, Needham was recommended for a permanent commission and continued service as an officer. His career was cut unfortunately short when he was killed in a plane crash near Beltsville, Maryland on 17 May 1945.

Commissioned VAH-1. I have the distinction of having the largest gas bill in VP-3 history. In route up the Hudson Straits we encountered a strong headwind running low on fuel we diverted to Royal Candian Air Force Base Frovisher Can. While refueling the aircraft having taken on 12,000 gallons plus fuel the driver wanted to know if we had cash money,I said no we pay by voucher he shut the truck off and said we don't take vouchers. He said the gas was flown in 55 gallon drum and he would have to pump it out. After a long deliberation by the Plane Commander with the base Commander they accepted the voucher for $9,000.00 plus dollars. That gas was $7.00 per gallon. We may still owe for that gasoline. In 1950 VP-731 was a reserve squadron activated for the Korean war, I was the electronic officer of VP-731 VP-731 on her first deployment to NS Sangley Point, Philippines in 1951. On return to San Diego I transferred to VU-3 VU-3a (drones) as Assistant Electronic Officer. Next I was sent to FAW-2 FAW-14 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii while at FAW-2 on TAD to VP-6 I supervised upgrading configuration of new P2V-5's for WestPac duty. When the FAW was deployed to WestPac I was detached for having too much time in WestPac and was assigned to FASRON-110 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. My next station was NAS Point Mugu, California as Range Comm Officer. After a tragic accident when family members of VW-2 vw2a were lost on deployment to NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. I was ordered as a replacement for the man that lost his family. I was designated as a Naval Aviation Observer and I spent 1 1/2 years with VW-2a operating P4M aircraft-1Q aircraft. The VW-2a unit was redesignated as VQ-2 in 1956. I was mustered out in July 1956 and returned to civilian life. I joined the Naval Reserve as an Electronic Officer in VS-837 (NAS Brooklyn, New York). The squadron was recalled to active duty in 1961 for the Berlin Crisis and included a 3 month deployment to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On return from NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba I transfered to VP-837 (NAS Brooklyn, New York). I finally retired from reserve duty in 1978 as an LCDR - I was the electronics officer LCDR of VS-837 when we were activated in October 1961. We were deployed to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in the spring of 1962 for about six weeks. Our squadron was selected for an experimental long legs project at Grumman Aircraft that involved installation of large fuel tanks in the bomb bay. The work was done on site at NAS Floyd Bennett Field, New York. VS-837 was deactivated in June 1962. During my VS-837 active duty I was able to commute to my home in Trumbull, CT on a regular basis. NEUMANN, AN Warren E. njpi@aol.com "...Did "Boots" at Bainbridge, MD 11/51 soon after it was reactivated after WW2; signed up for aviation and sent AO School NATTC NAS Jacksonville, Florida; transferred to NAF Annapolis, Maryland 1952 and assigned to 3 jobs, the gear locker, Plane Captain to 2 N3N's and also "recovery crew", the guys in wet suits who walked the craft down the ramp into the water and guilded it off the dolly, and then again "Catching" the N3N when it taxied to the ramp returning. There were always a few happy moments ducking the prop as my partner & I caught the struts and guided the craft back onto a dolly. If the craft came too close to either of us and we had to back up, one would step off the ramp and go under, whereupon the wet suit would fill up with water and you would go under. I wonder if it's too late to file an OSHA suit.......LOL! Early '53, after going home to NJ on some weekends and having to explain why I wasn't in Korea when some of my buds came home with war stories, I requested transfer to sea duty. The CO called me in and explained as a patient father would, that NAF was the best duty in the fleet and I should reconsider but he allowed the transfer to USS Hornet CVA-12 which was at Brooklyn Navy Yard about to be recommissioned; was aboard Hornet for recommissioning on 9/11/53, shakedown cruise to Cuba, D.R. & Haiti, then off for a world cruise via Suez & became part of TF 77 & TG 70.3 running up & down the Formosa [now Taiwan] Straits to assist in the protection of Formosa from Red China; would be at sea for as long as 2 months without hitting the beach, replenishing at sea, with 24/7 air ops; I was in V-1 Div on flight deck and assigned as an LSO hook checker, spotting incoming jets for tail hook, flaps & landing gear down with binocs to enable the LSO to give a wave off when necessary because of the craft speed. Pretty exciting stuff for a 20 year old kid, as I remember. Back to Pearl on 12/7/54, San Diego, and discharged 5/1/55. NOSTALGIA TIME: Perhaps around 1990, I drove down to NAF Annapolis, Maryland intent on revisiting my life, only to find a female SN about 5'1" at the gate who allowed me aboard when I showed her my credentials and told her I had been stationed there 40 years before; her respose was WOW. I was shocked to find that this was no longer an NAF, no aircraft etc, just many sailboats on dollies. I walked on onto the ramp area and stood for many minutes looking across the Severn River, bathed in flashes of memory of what was ........... I did love it... as I'm sure many of did. GO NAVY!..." I must have made over 100 flights between Argentia and the Azores and back. Any ideas on how to get rosters of the crews and squadron for that period would be appreciated. The Squadron Commander of VW-11 up to 1957 was Otto Findlay who is alive and well farming in West Va. I hope to see him soon again to discuss those Dew Line/Barrier patrols.
