Memorial Picture "...POND, LCDR Richard E...POND, LCDR Richard E. USN (Ret) VP-4 1954-56. Dick Pond served in the Navy for 23 years as a pilot and communications engineer. He retired as lieutenant commander in 1968 and moved with his family from Brunswick, Maine, to Southern California, settling in the then small town of Newbury Park, where he lived with his wife for 43 years. After working 20 years for Lockheed in Burbank, Dick retired and devoted his time to his hobbies of photography, gardening, computers and baking bread. He and his wife of 61 years had three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren (and counting). Dick was preceded in death by his granddaughter Danielle Burt. He is survived by his wife, Roberta, and family members Patty, Rick, Carol, Danny, Pam, Bill, Tanya, Bradley, Sally, Shannon, Robert, Andy, Daniel, Nikki, Alyssa, Canaan, Mokey and Izzy. Memorial Picture "...PORTER, LCDR Kennard...I am looking for anyone who may have known my dad LCDR Kennard Porter. At the age of 17 Ken enlisted as a Seaman Recruit in United States Navy, and after a 30 year career retired at the rank of LCDR, a true Mustang. During his military career Ken served on numerous aircraft carries including USS Mindoro, USS Wright, USS Leyte, USS Midway and the USS Independence; saw duty stations including NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, NAS Bermuda, NAS Sanford, Florida, NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and NAS Brunswick, Maine. At the age of 34 Ken accepted his commission as an Ensign and became the oldest flight student to attend Naval Flight Officer training. Ken began a distinguished flying career as the Navigator/Tactical Coordinator assigned to VP-44 stationed at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland flying P-3 Orion ASW aircraft with deployments to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada and the NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. Memorial PictureShipmate Pix "...PORTER, Dr. Lee Warwick Jr. (VP-4 - 1960-1963) - Dr. Lee Warwick Porter, Jr., beloved husband, devoted son, supportive brother, loving step-father, wonderful granddaddy, American patriot, helpful friend, compassionate Christian, leader of his church was resurrected to his heavenly mansion on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Born on November 3, 1934 to Ethel Orrell Porter and Lee Warwick Porter, Sr., in Wilmington, Dr. Porter grew up along Masonboro Sound before moving to Wilmington with his family as a teenager. He was well-educated at New Hanover High School where he graduated in 1953 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957. Dr. Porter placed his formal education on hold to defend his country as a Naval Pilot flying P2 reconnaissance planes based in Okinawa. Dr. Porter was committed to serving in the United States Navy, even after his time of active duty by continuing as a Naval Reservist until retiring in 1994. Dr. Porter returned to UNC-Chapel Hill to graduate from the School of Dentistry in 1968 after his tour of duty. His love for the people of his hometown led him to return to Wilmington to begin his practice of dentistry that continued uninterrupted for thirty-five years. Upon his retirement from practicing dentistry full-time, Dr. Porter continued filling in for area Dentists during their times of vacation and study and also served as a member of the faculty of Cape Fear Community College. The love of Dr. Porter's life was Wanda Pigott Porter, his wife, companion, dental assistant, best friend and partner in ministry. The two of them enjoyed better than thirty-two years of married life together. Dr. Porter is survived by his wife, Wanda and many relatives throughout the USA. Dr. Porter was pre-deceased by a sister, Constance (Connie) Porter Tilson. A celebration of Dr. Porter's life was conducted on March 20 at The First Baptist Church of Wilmington of which Dr. Porter was a member for better than sixty years. His remains will be interred in the columbarium of First Baptist Church. Dr. Porter's family sincerely thank the medical and nursing staffs of New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the care they provided to Dr. Porter and each of them during his final days on earth. I know very little because he passed away when I was 12 (1967) of complications from emphysema. He was based in NAS Alameda, California and from what I've read I guess that would have put him in squadron VR-2. My information is that he joined the Navy and was stationed in California before December 7, 1941 so he may have participated in the startup of the squadron. I seem to recall him saying that they flew between California and Pearl. POLLOCK, CAPTAIN Thomas F. http://www.history.navy.mil/ar/papa/pollock.htm "...Captain Thomas Franklin Pollock was born in Saticoy, California, on 8 August 1911. He attended Chaffee High School and Chaffee Junior College in Ontario, California and the University of California at Berkeley. For eighteen months, during 1933 and 1934, he was employed by the General Electric Company in Ontario, California. From 1934 to 1935, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve, attached the 9th Corps. Enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserve in August 1936, Captain Pollock had elimination flight training at the Naval Reserve Aviation Base, Long Beach, California. He was appointed an Aviation Cadet in the Naval Reserve in December 1936 and after flight training at NAS Pensacola, Florida, he was designated a Naval Aviator in January 1938. He was commissioned as an Ensign to date from 1 January 1938. He joined the Regular Navy in 1941, and continued to advance in rank to Captain, to date from 1 July 1956. From February 1938 to February 1943, Pollock served with VP-18, VP-13, VP-26, VP-102, and VP-101 operating from Pearl Harbor, San Diego, the Philippine Islands and the Java-Australia areas. In 1939, he participated in the mass flights of PBY squadrons to the Philippine Islands with CPW-10-. After the loss of his aircraft by enemy action in 1941, he became a member of a Navy Bluejacket Battalion (Infantry) on Bataan. In January 1942, he escaped from Corregidor to Java on the submarine USS Seawolf and in April 1942, four days prior to the fall of the Philippines, flew a PBY seven thousand miles from Perth to Corregidor, and returned to deliver medicine and evacuate nurses and civilians. For these actions, he was awarded the Silver Star, and he earned the right to wear the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon awarded to VP-101 and VP-102. During the period of February 1943 to December 1944, Captain Pollock was the Officer-in-Charge of the Experimental Unit of the Headquarters Squadron, FAW-14, and Officer-in-Charge of the Air Unit at the Naval Ordnance Test Station, Inyokern, California. In 1943, he fired the first rockets from naval aircraft, including the 1,200 lb Tiny Tim and assisted in the development of magnetic detection techniques for antisubmarine warfare. He received a Letter of Commendation, with authorization to wear the commendation ribbon. He was also awarded the Order of the British Empire by the Government of Great Britain. He was then the Officer-in-Charge of Air Support Training Unit 6 and as such developed air support tactics for amphibious operations in the Pacific. In July 1945, he assumed command of Air Support Control Unit #9, which, under his command, participated in the occupation of Japan. From January 1946 to May 1947, he was a student at the Naval War College and General Line School, Newport, Rhode Island, and between June and September 1947, attended a refresher course in multi-engine aircraft at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida. He had Prospective Executive Officer/Prospective Commanding Officer training at Ream Field, Imperial Beach, California until November 1947. He then became Commanding Officer of VP-4. As such, he completed the first aerial mapping survey of Southeast Alaska, covering over 50,000 square miles for the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service. He received a special award for winning the Flight Safety Award for three consecutive quarters. From June 1949 to July 1952, Captain Pollock was an instructor at the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and in that assignment, participated in the early atomic tests at Desert Rock, Nevada. Following duty as Special Assistant (plans for atomic matters) to the Commander Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, he reported in February 1953 as executive officer of the escort carrier, USS Mindoro. After the carrier conducted early U.S. Marine Corps helicopter troop landing operations for the development of vertical envelopment concepts, Pollock was reassigned to the Staff of Commander, Carrier Division 16, as Operations Officer. In that post, he developed antisubmarine warfare tactics and advanced magnetic detection techniques and participated in the NATO antisubmarine warfare exercise CENTERBOARD critique in Lisbon. He was Atomic Plans Officer on the Staff of the Commander in Chief, Pacific, from February 1956 to May 1958, after which he served as Aviation Budget Officer in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department, Washington, D.C. In that capacity he participated in Congressional appropriations committee budget hearings. In June 1959, he assumed command of USS Canisteo. In June 1960, he was detached to serve as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations to the Commander, Antisubmarine Defense Force, Pacific. On 19 October 1961, he reported as Commander, FAW-14 and in May 1963, he became Commander Fleet Air, Southwest Pacific. In March 1964, he joined the Joint Staff of the Commander, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, with headquarters in Saigon and in March 1965, he was ordered to duty in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Washington, D.C. Wiley Hunt) and doing one tour flying out of Kodiak. Served in VP-6 from January of 1950 (again flying with PPC Hunt, and then with Lt. Sullivan in our second tour in Japan) to 1953. Yes, I was one of the original "Blue Sharks" and flew a total of 79 missions during the Korean war, doing two tours of duty. (By the way, P.R. Foster and "Rags" Raglan, both of whom I had flown with in VP-27, were MIA in the patrol lost near Vladivostok during our second tour in 1951 I served one more tour in Kodiak with VP-6 in late 1952 (Lt. jg Scott Carpenter was our Navigator, Lt. John St. Marie our PPC), after which I was transferred to Alameda, where I joined VP-9. VP-9 brought me out to Japan again for a third tour of duty in 1953, just after the shooting stopped. But the Navy decided that La Dolce Vita was what I needed, so it was a transfer to Naval Attache duty in Rome, Italy, for two years. Then back to my beloved P2Vs. this time P2V-7s, with VP-11 at Brunswick, Maine. We did a tour in Malta, from where I was again able to visit old friends in Rome. I left the Navy in November of 1956, after almost nine years of service, to continue my eduction. Following his first operational tour, he reported as a student at the Naval Postgraduate School in June 1990 were he received a Masters of Science Degree in Information Systems. In June 1992, he reported aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) home ported in Norfolk, Virginia where he served as the V-2 Training Officer, Bow Catapults Branch Officer, and Fire Watch Division Officer. He qualified as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer and made a Mediterranean/Red Sea deployment in support of Operations DENY FLIGHT, PROVIDE PROMISE, and SOUTHERN WATCH. In April 1994, he reported as an FRS instructor to VP-30 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. His jobs included Assistant Maintenance Officer and Administrative Officer. He was qualified as an FRS ASW Navigator/Communicator and Tactical Coordinator Instructor. In August 1996, he reported to the world famous "Fighting Tigers" of VP-8 in NAS Brunswick, Maine. His jobs included Assistant Training Officer, Tactics Officer, CTG 67.1 Operations Officer, and Squadron Operations Officer. He made a Mediterranean deployment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily and supported Operations DECISIVE ENDEAVER/DELIBERATE GUARD and SILVER WAKE. In July 1998, he reported to the Navy Personnel Command, Millington, Tennessee where he served initially as the Branch Head, Officer Performance Branch (PERS-834), and then the Director, Personnel Performance, Security, and Separations Division (PERS-83). While there, he also completed the Naval War College Non-Resident Seminar Program and earned a Naval War College Diploma. It's really great to see posted the photos of so many great P2s. I flew in everyone of the VP-67 aircraft shown on this site. The P2 was a real airplane. Unlike a P-3, it had no air conditioning unless you had the hatches open, and no heat most of the time. Chief Pools used to tell us "Unless it's on fire - stay with the airplane. It'll get you on the ground when others won't." I asked him one time how to be sure there was enough oil in the 3350s. He said, "Son, if if it's still coming over the wing in flight there's enough oil in 'em." You've kindled some great memories of fun times (if hard) times aloft. Thanks!..." [03JUN2003]

POWERS, LCDR Bruce rbpowers@compuserve.com "...I joined VP-19 at NAS Moffett Field, California in the fall of 1988. Did their NAS Misawa, Japan deployment in 1989 as a Nav with much on top time thanks to the Soviet Navy. Went on to do the 1991 NAS Misawa, Japan deployment as a TACCO and got some more on top time. Watched Big Red decommissioned in 1991, then went on to the Naval Postgrad School for my first M.S. Did a two year tour with Tactical Support Center NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan and left the Nav in 1996. Got a second M.S. from U. of Illinois, and as of Jan. '99 will be a space station flight controller at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. I continue the adventure with the Navy Reserve, and visited Puerto Rico and Panama in '97 and '98. Made the 1975 NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployment.
