SLAUGHTER, William "Randy" slaug6081@aol.com "...Enlisted at the Federal Building in downtown Dallas, Texas November 1966 and started my boot camp adventure in San Diego March 13, 1967 with Company 164 commanded by MM1 Herb Brewer. Brewer was from Arkansas and made life particularly hard for the group of Texans in 164. From RTC San Diego I reported to VP-17 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington on June 16, 1967 and was given the weekend off to explore the beautiful island. After muster on Monday morning I was given my first duty as a regular sailor......wash a P2 Neptune. As the months of training for a tour overseas continued I learned how to mop floors, get up early to work in the chow hall and continue to wash P2 Neptune's. On November 5 or 6 a bunch of us boarded a C-118 or C-121 for the long flight to NS Sangley Point, Philippines. NS Sangley Point, Philippines, Cavite City, NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam and Manila were quite a change for a young man from Texas. While overseas I left the "Airdale" part of my "career" in the Navy and started working with DK2 Don Winter's in the Disbursing Office. The duty was much better and I was finished washing planes. I enjoyed my friends and the team at VP-17 but unfortunately the squadron didn't need two DK's so on November 26, 1968 I was sent to NAS North Island, San Diego, California in Coronado, CA. to be on the staff of Carrier Anti-Submarine Warfare Group 53. For the next few months I bounced between NAS North Island, San Diego, California and the 11th Naval District Headquarters in downtown San Diego before departing with the four squadron's that made up CVSG-53 on the USS Kearsarge CVS-33 in March of 1969. Carrier duty wasn't nearly as nice as VP deployment but we did see NAS Pearl Harbor, Hawaii twice, Japan, Hong Kong (again twice) and NS Subic Bay, Philippines three times. Unfortunately one of the NS Subic Bay, Philippines layovers was after one of our escort ships the USS Frank E. Evan's had been cut in half in a collision with the HMS Melbourne with the loss of 74 U.S. Navy officer's and sailors lives. The Kearsarge and crew returned to San Diego later that year and I was sent back to the District Headquarter's in downtown San Diego. Fortunately for me the Disbursing and Supply Divisions were overcrowded in that old building and I was able to secure a transfer across San Diego Bay to Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado where I stayed until discharged on December 1, 1970. By the way, if you are ever close to San Diego on the 4th of July make sure you catch the celebrations on Coronado Island. A great place to be on our national's birthday. I'll meet you at the VFW Hall to watch the parade..." [BIO Updated 19JUN2007 | 13JUN2007]
