P2V-7 Buno: 135553, HF-12. We received it new in the squadron in early August 1955, deployed the next day to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. (The rest of the aircraft had already left NAS Jacksonville, Florida so I parked it on VP-16's line for the night. During pre-flight the next morning, my Plane AD1 Howell and Radioman Martinoff found that VP-16 swapped out our brand new radios with theirs from 135 series P2V-5's. I won't get into the details, but suffice it to say this lowly JG was able to get everything returned and launched within 90 minutes for the five month deployment to Iceland.) Smith's service in the South Pacific from January 1944 to August 1944. He was stationed with ACORN 28 at Port Hueneme, CA as Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class. On 3 May 1944, ACORN 28 arrived at Pityilu Island, Manus in the Admiralties on the SS Howell Lykes in order to set up an advanced air base there. This base later also became the home of CASU-42 and continued to operate until the end of the war. From Septe, ber 1944 to May 1945 he was assigned to VS-61. According to the history, VS-61 was part of FAW-10 which at that time was at Manus Island, Admiralties preparing for the Philippines invasion. On October 17, 1944 FAW-10 relocated to Leyte Gulf, Philippines aboard the USS Currituck (AV-7). Dad told me that he flew as the rear gunner on an SBD Dive Bomber. FAW-10 had at least 4 SBD-5's along with Catalinas, OS2Us and J2Fs, according to the history. It is this time period when VS-61 was in the Philippines that I'm trying to find out more about. On November 30, 1944, FAW-10 was relocated to Jinamoc Seaplane Base, San Pedro Bay, Leyte Gulf, Philippines. In May 1945 Dad was reassigned back to Pityilu Island, Admiralties as part of CASU-42. Most of the history outlined here was obtained from the Naval Historical Center, Washington Navy Yard DC and from my father's service record. Anyone who may have known my father or who have any more info regarding VS-61, FAW-10 or CASU-42 during these time periods. Please feel free to write or call (574-238-4478)..." He was a pilot, and commanded VP-44 NAS Brunswick, Maine, CPW-2 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, and the Patrol Wings of the U. S. Pacific Fleet from NAS Moffett Field, California. In this latter capacity he was in charge of the 13 Navy maritime patrol squadrons stationed from California, through the Pacific region to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. From 1967-68 he was the Communications Officer aboard USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) and made two deployments to the Tonkin Gulf for operations in Viet Nam. Rear Admiral Smith was Director of Navy Strategy, Plans and Policy (OP-60) in the Pentagon from 1989 to 1991. His duties included representing the Navy's position to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His final active duty assignment was as the Director, Plans and Policy, U.S. Central Command. In that job he was involved in directing the draw-down of military forces in the Arabian Gulf Region following Operation Desert Storm. He traveled extensively in the Middle East and gained an insight into the customs and traditions of the region. (Chronology of duty assignments on page 2.) Following retirement, P.D. was a consultant to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Marietta, Georgia from 1993-97, advising on the sale of maritime patrol aircraft to the Gulf Region. He joined the company full-time in late 1997 as the Director of Near East Business Development, directing a staff responsible for marketing in Greece, Turkey, Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. In 1999 he became the Director of Maritime Requirements for the company. In that capacity he was responsible for the sales and marketing of LMAC built aircraft to naval forces. His staff marketed the P-3 Orion and S-3 Viking aircraft world-wide and the C-130J Hercules to the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard. He retired from Lockheed Martin in December 2000. RADM Smith is a native of Huntington, West Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Duke University and a Master of Science Degree in International Affairs from the George Washington University. He attended both the Naval War College and the Navy School of Command and Staff. He is a life-time member of the Association of Naval Aviation and during 2000 served on the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Council, Navy League of the United States. P.D. is married to the former Mary Evelyn Spencer of Milton, Florida. They reside in Alexandria, Virginia and have three children and two grandchildren, all living in northern Florida..." SMITH, ATN2 Raymond E. Jr. raymondesmith@hotmail.com "...I served with VP-18 as electronics technician and aircrew member as radioman and later second tech (ATN2) during the 1962 - 1964 time period. I was part of a detachment to Key West during the Cuban missle crisis and spent many hours on flights flying over ships going in and out of Havana and noting their names and port of registry. US ports were supposed to refuse to load/unload ships after they had been seen trading with Cuba during that time. Many of the ships were British but occassionally there was a big Russian cruise ship bringing 'technicians' to/from Cuba. I was part of a deployment to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada during February and spend some time 'flying the ice patrols' with a stop or two to NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. I was part of a 6 month detachment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland and flew many times from NAS Keflavik, Iceland and will always remember the montly r/r trips to Norway and/or Denmark where we were 'exercising our NATO rights' stopping at several sites in Northern Norway before going to Oslo or Copenhagen for a few days. I was 'out on the town' in Copenhagen the night that Kennedy was shot and won't forget the people's reaction when news that our president had been killed was first broadcast there -- with many inital errors I might add -- like the 'President of Mexico was also shot' when they meant the governer of Texas, John Connelly. I made a UNITAS 'goodwill' trip to South America that lasted 103 days I will never forget. I wish I could afford to make that trip again -- and was 21 or so again too. I would like to hear from anybody who served with VP-18 during that time and still keep up with several friends from squadron..." [06APR2002]

SMITH, E-5 Richard J. (Smitty) rnksmit@netzero.net> "...I was a member of the original 1st RR Company forming in Fort Benning, GA in December 1966, than to Marana Air Park, AZ and on to NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. I was sent to Fort Benning, GA from Fort Lee, VA after graduation from Quarter Master Cook School. My self and three other cooks were told that we had special orders to get to Fort Benning, GA immediately. There was no flights, trains, or buses going to GA. So we took a "TAXICAB" which cost us $95 each and a very long ride in the cab. When we arrived at Fort Benning, GA there was no Unit and the base Commander put us in the transit barracks. The Commander said he had no information of a ASA Unit. A couple of days later three more men showed up. I forgot how long we went with out any other troops, we had fun going to the EM Club. Until one day we were sleep, the next morning there was a lot of noise and there it was over two hundred troops. I worked as a cook and military ploiceman, guarding the P2, out post, and headquarters. I was in the U.S. Army Security Agency which turned into 1st Radio Research (Crazy Cat) from 1966 to 1968. I ets in June 1968 Specialist E5 and went back to my job on Wall Street for Chase Manahattan Bank. In 1969 I went to work at a Large Department Store chain (J.W. Mays, Inc.) as an Executive Accountant, and changed careers in 1973 in Computer Service and Telecommunications which I'm still presently doing in my own business and member of Home Land Security. I had some wonderful years with the Crazy Cats and rode the P2 many times with Col Mac. We had a great bunch of guys and we all stuck together and when I had a chance I kept them well fed with the Navy and Air Force rations in those big consolidated mess halls. I was assigned to the suicide squade to help protect the base if attacked. Did guard on a mail run out in the boonies with Spc 4 Collier. Myself, the other cooks, and military ploice had to take to the fox holes along the perimeter fence at our Naval Compound in NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam during the Tet offensive of 1968 to protect the rest of the troops and air craft on the base and calling Defense Control of the action. I still have many memories of my tour and will never forget (maybe some of the names of the guys) age took care of that. I was called "Smitty" or the "Village Rat" by some, you all know the Village!!!! The other cooks were George "Money Bags - Nick the Greek" Dactilus, William "Mack" Mc Closkey, James "Jim" Miller. I wish the best to all the Crazy Cats and my deepest sympathy to the families of those who are decease, I will never forget the Unit..." [15JAN2003]

He was a AE3 when he left, and I know he was part of at least two classified deports to the Phillipines, because they were short people of his skillmanship (during VP-42). I also know when he first got to VP-42 they were already on a mission, I believe the Phillipines, so he worked in the AMD for awhile. According to him he remembers a Gerald Hanson (sp?), and a Powers (?), I believe they were both AE's also. I know Dad worked on P2 Neptune's, P-3 Orion's, and on the C-130 Cargo planes. Dad had a fire at the house in January 2000, and lost all but on small snapshot of his Naval pictures. I would love to get some visual reminders of that time back for him, but I need help. Building 319-U, I returned from leavy and was transported via rail to a then unknown destination where I along with many others boarded the USS Albemarle (AV-5).
