Assigned to VP-49 in August 1961. I initially went to the Beach crew and from there 'graduated' to the position of 'Logs and Records Yoeman. It was not exactly exciting duty but I did get to 'GITMO' and also made a trip to Trinidad with (then) LCDR Jim Chesley. while I was the Logs and Records yeoman, the Navy, in its infinite wisdom, changed the designation of the Marlin P5M to 'SP5B.'..." We were on deployment at the time the accident (SEE: In Memorial for VP-47 lost friends April 12, 1973) happened. I was at NAS Adak, Alaska when we got the word that RD5 had crashed with another aircraft. At first we were told that there were no survivors. I was happy to hear later that Bruce Mallibert had survived. I had the pleasure of knowing and flying with Bruce on several occasions during our deployments and when the squadron was home at NAS Moffett Field, California. I remember him as a good athelete because we played team basketball and flag football together. We lost part of our family that day on April 12, 1973. VENTRICE, ARM3 Robert pathfinder8671@webtv.net "...I volunteered into the US NAVY in November 1944 a few days after my 17th birthday. At the enlistment office a CPO looked at my papers and asked me if I wanted be in the Navy Air Corps - Of course I jumped at that opportunity. After we finished Gunnery School at NAS Pensacola, Florida, we were told that we would be sent to the South Pacific by Thanksgiving 1945. That would be after Flight Operations at our next base which for me was NAS Lake City, Florida. I served with VP-1 at NAS Lake City, Florida from 1945 to 1946. We flew the PV-1 with a five man crew (Pilot, Co-Pilot, Radioman, Ordananceman and Mechanic). Our PV-1s had two gun positions, top turret with twin 50's, bottom belly position and one 30 cal. I believe there was either two or five fixed position machine guns mounted within the nose of the fuselage. Our aircraft could be fitted with either bombs, or mines or torpedo. I now live about 90 miles south of my old Naval Air Station. I have recently found out that the base became Lake City Municipal Airport. I will take a ride up there to see what it looks like now. From what I read, the only building still standing is the old brig, which is used by the Community College..." [14MAY2008]

We then went to Reykjavik, Iceland for several months Patrolling the North Atlantic. Then to Pembroke Dock, South Wales for about a year where we patrolled the Bay of Biscay. From there we went to NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco and patrolled the Straights of Gibralter till the end of the war. I was an AMM and Plane Captain under several officers including Lt. Most of the wives of the crewmembers were pregnant at that time. I remember we all stayed together at Pauline (and JO) Wright's house (along with Deanna (Wes) Charles, Carol (Dick) Davis and Donna (Bud) Kolodgy) when the guys were deployed during the Cuban missle crisis. That's when our son decided it was time to enter the world. I'll never forget walking into Parkside Memorial Hospital to deliver my son, with 4 women escorting me who were as pregnant as I was! The nurse was in shock! I know Don would love to hear from any crewmates out there who remember him - especially Chill (Harold) Wills and JO Wright. He has recently been in touch with Dick Davis and Bert Ducey (sp?). Althought we're not married now, I'd be happy to forward any information to him or provide you with a way to contact him..."
