He was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Columbus, son of the late Don and Helen (Rotroff) Allen. His sister Karen Fastnaught, of Toledo, survives. Also surviving, his spouse Linda Mashburn Allen, of Brentwood. Gary was a member of Franklin First United Methodist Church, Franklin, Tenn., and past member of First Christian Church of Sandusky. He was presented with a medal and citation from the U.S. Navy for meritorious achievement as an air crewman of a P-3 patrol aircraft during a special reconnaissance mission off the coast of South Korea for directly detecting and subsequent destruction of an enemy infiltrator surface craft. His efforts were instrumental in bringing his damaged aircraft safely to a landing at a friendly base. His skillful airmanship, courage and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He was authorized to wear the combat "V". During his career he was presented with several other medals and citations. One of the photos he took from aboard a VP-7 aircraft was the one shown during President Kennedy's news conference on national TV during his announcement of the Cuban Blockade. Gary was an amateur radio operator (HAM) with the call sign of KB8APU. He enjoyed his experiences operating from various locations. He worked with operators near home base locations to provide members of his squadron with the ability to contact their families via radio from the squadron's deployed locations. His operating included operations while aboard naval aircraft. He was not able to utilize his amateur radio hobby during the last few years as he would have liked to. The children with whom Gary shared his life and loved all survive him. They are Deb (Bob) Redmond, of Port Clinton, Don Allen, of Sandusky, and Dawn (Allan) Peterson, of Fremont, whose mother Sarah Crawfis Hartley, survives. BACKE, Carl ccbconnect@aol.com "...I served with VP-7 from 1952-1954 on Crew #5 as radar tech. Lt. Joe Pedigo was PPC; Ensign Smith, PP1P; "Blackie" DeLorme, Plane Captain; Mike Snyder, radio; Gus Alagna, ECM; Lew Stepka, ordnance; Glenn Hillegass, 2nd radio. Lt. Joe was a great plane jockey. I remember those rocket runs off Block Island near NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and the sonobuoy sub hunts in the Atlantic. Our deployment to NAS Iwakuni, Japan was a real operational challenge to us. Patrols to Port Arthur to survey shipping to the North, sub hunts in the Yelow Sea, patrols along the Korean coast as far as Vladivostok, and cover for Task force 77.7 during replenishment, searching for displaced North Korean and Chinese troops from their POW camps in the south that were turned loose by Singman Rhee. Flew every fourth day or nite. Being 19 yrs old at the time was pretty excitying duty. We lost two planes: one ditched just south of Korea and all but one crew member was saved. Lt. Commander Essex didn't make it. Sad. Also our hanger queen slammed into a mountain in a landing attempt at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii on the way home to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Still see those buddies in my mind and will forever. Would love to hear from anyone from those great days!..." [28MAR2000]

We shared the electric shop with VP-8 (our sister squadron). VP-8 had two electricians named Chief Ohm and AE1 Watts! Transferred to the NAIRDEV Unit at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts from 1954-1956. Our CO CDR Hart had also been my CO at VP-7. I worked on his Model A car several times. Reported to VW-15 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from 1956-1959. Flew on the barrier flights out of NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada (those were some hairy flights). I was then assigned to NATTC NAS Jacksonville, Florida for AE-A school instructor duty from 1959-1963. Looking back, I enjoyed this tour of duty. Transferred back to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to Project Magnetic (VXN-8) from 1963-1967. As far as I can tell, our three aircraft were the only aircraft in the Navy to have "nose art". The two Super Connies had the "Road Runner" and "El Coyote", the R5D had a "Kiwi bird". Was a great outfit if you wanted to flew around the world. Transferred to VT-4 after making AECS in latter part of 1966. I served with VT-4 from 1967-1968. Reported to VA-86 aboard CVA-66 USS America on patrol in the Tonkin Gulf from 1968-1969. Some of our squadron pilots perform spotter duty for the battleship, I believe the New Jersey, during off shore shelling. Returned to the NAS Norfolk, Virginia after stops in Sidney Australia, Wellington NZ, and Rio Brazil. What a way to spend over 20 years in the Navy. I was a technical writer at LTV A7 aicraft test equipment from 1969-1978. I went to work as technical writer at General Dynamics Fort Worth, TX. from 1978-1993. Wrote electrical maintenance manuals on F-16, F-111, (Navy's A-12, cancelled 1991), F-22. Lockheed acquired Fort Worth General Dynamics Division in spring of 1993. I retired from Lockheed in November 1993. I have had a great time, would love to back up and do it all over again. If any of you out there remmeber me, give me call on the ole net..." I would love to hear from anyone that served with FASRON-101...I was assigned to FASRON-101, NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. in Dec. '51. Discharged Sept. '53. I was an AO 3 in the Ordnance Shack on the North side of Seaplane Hangar 2. We shared the hangar with a VF squadron flying AD Skyraiders. Can't remember the # anyone remember? We mainly serviced VP-7 and VP-8 occupying Seaplane Hangar 3. Did my share of ramp and hangar watches in the cold, cold weather. Almost froze this southerner to death. Really did enjoy making AO 3, then my watches were in the Duty Office, delivering coffee to the others freezing on the outside watches. Got lucky in Feb. '53 and was sent TAD NS Roosevelt Roads, PR for Opeation Springboard, supporting VP-7 and VP-8. I remember an AO Miller, stating that he almost turned white in an aborted landing there. I was out near the landing strip. I didn't think they were going to get back up before the props hit the deck, really close call. MICHAELS, AL3 Maurice (Bud) shirleybudvp7@aol.com "...I served with VP-7 1951 - 1954. Our crew was crew 11 out of NAS Iwakuni, Japan in 1953. Our pilot was LT(jg) Volmer, Plane Captain was Moore, 2nd Mech was Bill Scherbon (who I am still in contact with), 1st Radioman was Rosalis and I was the 2nd Radioman. I think our crew flew the last mission of the Korean war on 27 July 1953. I would love to contact any squadron mates from that period of time. In those days most of us went to NAS Millington, Tennessee for A and B school. Three weeks ago I visited Millington with my wife who I met while going to A and B schools there, and my son and daughter in law. The base is not Navy any more. It was closed about half dozen years ago I was told. The water tower that used to have the rotating green lights is still there. The small hanger that we took some classes in is still there. At that time, 1950, it housed an Avenger and a few fighters, I thank Hellcats. They were used to show us how to take the radios out and to safety wire them in. The hanger now is being used for a great project. Volunteers have disassembled the famous Memphis Bell B-17 flying fortress and are restoring it. They are doing a beautiful job. They are giving very interesting tours of all aspects of their work and B-17 air craft. They are trying to raise money to finish their project. After seeing their good work it would have been hard not to drop money in the bottle they were using to make the collection. The base hospital is now part of the Shelby county Jail system. My daughter was born in that base hospital in 1953 while we, VP-7, were in Japan at the end of the Korean War. I took my first plane ride while there in 1950. The plane was a PBY-5A Catalina. My buddy, Andy Mihans and I did not have enough money to go to town one Sunday and we took a walk around the base. Some reservist were were running the engine on the Catalina. We walked up and asked for a ride, a ride I will never forget, even after flying in P2V for 3 years..." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 09JUL2005 | 27FEB2002]

PILCHER, LCDR Howard G. Retired hgpilcher@pcola.gulf.net "...My first contact with the P2V was when I was assigned to the Advanced training Command as a NAVCAD at NAS Hutchinson, Kansas. I arrived just as they were phasing the PB4Y2 out of the Navigation phase of advanced training. I was one of the first NAVCADS chosen to solo the P2V as a student pilot. I am not sure how many were chosen but I think it was just a few since it was sort of an experiment. We were flying the P2V-2, P2V-3 and I think they had a P2V-4 (I am not real sure about that). My next encounter was with VP-9 at NAS Alameda, California from Nov 1955-Dec 1958. Nine had just returned from deployment to NAS Kodiak, Alaska (They lost a P2V5-F that was shot down by MIGS) and had just transitioned into the new P2V-7's. I made two deployments with VP-9, one to NAS Iwakuni, Japan and one to NAS Kodiak, Alaska. Then I was assigned to ATU-501 (1959-1962) at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. I started flying the SNB (bug smasher) but soon the squadron changed from ATU-501 to VT-31 and the P2V's were reactivated along with the P5M Marlins. They had P2V-5F and P2V-6's. My next assignment was with VU-7 1962-1965 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California flying the JD-1 and was soon transitioned into the US2C (modified to drag a rag). Later the squadron split and the jet portion moved to NAS Miramar and the rest of us went to VU-3 where we kept flying the US2C and also the Drone equipped P2V5-F. Finally I was assaigned to VP-7 from 1967-1969 as Ops. Officer. We were supposed to transition to P-3's after our return from NAS Sigonella, Sicily but it turned out that the XO from VP-23 had done his homework and convinced the powers that be to transition them instead of VP-7. I do not remember if I ever flew the P2V-4 at Hutch or not but if I did, I think I have flown all models of the P2. I tried to verify this but I have misplaced my early years log book. I have been in contact with some of the names that I recognize in the web site and I am most anxious to hear from any of my Shipmates that can recall being the same places that I have..." I attended one reunion in the 80's and I guess I'll get ahold of Chief Houle to check on the next one..." [E-Mail Updated 05MAY2000 | 02FEB99]

TWARDY, Edward S. etwardy@earthlink.net "...I was aircrew with VP-7 from '62 until about '66. Joined the squadron just after it deployed from NAS Jacksonville, Florida to NAS Sigonella, Sicily in '62. Flew with Crew-10 for several years. The enlisted crew in your '63 crew picture for LB -10 includes Teddy Morris ADR3; Ed Twardy AE2; "Baby" Huey Madore AO2; Stewart, PC, AM2; and "Lump" Lunsford AT3. I was part of Crew 1 (LB-1) for the split deployment to NAS Keflavik, Iceland & NS Rota, Spain in 1964. Two regular members of that crew did not fly the night that Crew 1 (flying in LB-6) was lost off the Spanish coast in May 1964. Cdr. Phaon Derr, CO of VP-7, was attending an affair at the Spanish Commandant's home and I had just been removed temporarily from flight status two days earlier due to broken bone in my foot (sustained while "barhopping" with the crew in NS Rota, Spain a few days earlier). John Q. Kimberly, AE1 took my place on the doomed flight on May 11, 1964. He had five kids and was within a year of having his 20 years in. He and the rest of the crew perished when they apparently dipped a wing on a searchlight run. Lt. Bishop was a fully qualified PPC and was likely in the left seat that night. No bodies were recovered. It's been over 40 years and I still feel like a guy who just lost his crew. Some feelings never go away..." [09FEB2005]

WIDELL, AX1 Joseph D. Retired jdw22@ime.net "...Entered the Navy at Syracuse, New York On Sept. 1957 and proceeded to Boot Camp at Great Lakes,Ill. From there to Norman, Oklahoma for Fundamentals school till 1958. Then on to AT "A" School at NATTC, Memphis, TN. After graduating, requested 1st Naval Dist. any VP. Reported to VP-7 just prior to the Squadron deploying to NS Rota, Spain. We were left TAD to FASRON 108 to attend Radio Code School at Brunswick. We joined VP-7 in NS Rota, Spain after a short stay in Port Leaouty, Morocco en-route. Served in VP-7 as Radioman on Crew 1, with then CDR Ipser J. Gersik, a man whom I enjoyed every minute of flying with. He could "grease" any landing. Did NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NS Rota, Spain, NAS Bermuda, NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada and of course NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. We were relieved in NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada on a split deployment by the ill-fated crew that crashed at sea in Dec.1959. We then, also crashed at NAS Brunswick, Maine a few weeks later in Jan.1960. Traveled to NAS Jacksonville, Florida for the homeport change which occured in Fall of 1961. Left VP-7 in Feb. 1962 for AT "B" School at Memphis. After "B" sent to NAS Cecil Field. There I spent 13 months in VF-174, a RAG F8U Crusader outfit. After spending a few weeks on the USS Independence CV-62 (my only shipboard duty and while on shore duty) I took advantage of the new AX rating and converted. Was then sent to VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida in 1963 to complete my tour of shore duty. After some hairy flighttime there I was transfered in 1964 back to Sea duty in VP-21 NAS Brunswick, Maine. Quit flying there and went TAD to NAS AIMD to work primarily MAD and ASW Systems. Left VP-21 in 1968 with orders to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland to the "White Whale", a Mobile Unit. While there we were Decommisioned as a Shore duty assignment. While awaiting new orders, we participated in a video taping of a AX Seminar. While talking to the Detailers I was approached by a man who wanted out of orders to NAS Brunswick, Maine and VP-44. We made the change and I received orders to VP-44. Back to "Broomstick"-Yahoo!! Served as Electronics Shop night check Supervisor, then daycheck and finally on to Quality Control. Also, spent many hours working on the ill-fated P-3A that crashed in 1972 in the Med. Myself and another shop tech were supposed to fly with that crew to Sicily and then on to Crete for a Mini Det. We were very fortunate that the local VR Squadron was willing to take us as passengers. I remained in VP-44 till I retired in April 1977. Have had enough excitement to last a lifetime. But,I do miss it and so does the wife. After retirement I went to work at Bath Iron Works building and overhauling Naval Combatants. Retired from there, also. Took an early retirement in 1995. Took a year off, got bored and went to work at LL Bean in Freeport, Me where I live..." [05JAN99]

WILBANKS, Bill R. tanebill@yahoo.com "...I served with VP-7 NAS Brunswick, Maine from July 1957 until March 1961 and went on 5 deployments. 1st was NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada in the winter (1957-1958), NS Rota, Spain (1959), NAS Keflavik, Iceland (1960), NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada (1960), and NS Roosevelt Roads, PR (1961). To anybody who wants to contact me, please feel free to do so. You meet alot of nice guys when you are in, but if your like me, you don't get any adresses and you can't remember peoples full names. After travelling to sunny climes with the Navy, I found out I did't like winters, so as soon as possible I moved to So. Ca. and have been here since. I've had a few side trips to the So. Pacific, Tahiti in name and lived there for awhile. Possibly moving there at some time, with my PC. My wife is from there and it will be no problem as far she is a property owner there.
