ALBERTS, CDR Paul "Mayor of Olongapo" paul.alberts@patinsurance.com "...I served as a In-Flight Tech (AX) with VP-22 from 1972 to 1975 and VP-90 NAS Glenview, Illinois. I was eventually selected for LDO and served with the reserves out of Great Lakes,IL (NARA) with NS Rota, Spain as Training Officer. Oh yes - earned the title in the Philippines on early tours with VP-90 just after leaving VP-22. Since my active time in PI allowed me to become VERY familiar with all the important areas, the green-horns of VP-90 couldn't ask a question about who-what-where while in PI without an answer. It prompted the comment: "Who are you...the goddam mayor of Olongapo?" Needless to say, it became a permanent title that still lives on today. And yes... one day "I will return"... back to the mother land! I am currently a CDR with the reserves at Rock Island, IL (USPACOM DET 216). I must confess to many terrific voyages to both the Pacific and Med. Just can't get enough - and I continue to look for more opportunities - especially in WestPac. My best to all my former Shipmates, and those that made serving not just a job, but a true adventure...." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 14SEP2004 | 20SEP97]

I was assigned to VP-872 at NAS Alameda, California and was with the squadron during all of the nuclear test in the pacific. While at Christmas Island, I was assigned to the flight line crew and worked long hours while the aircrews were racking up all of those flight hours. I remember fondly those months on Christmas Island and Johnson Island. I remember the trips to Por London to visit the British Navy Base and their version of ships stores. Also enjoyed their club. After my tour with VP-872, I served another 19 years in the Navy, retiring in 1984. I can say without a doubt, I think of those days with VP-872 more than any other tour in my career. I still have a patch and photos of the flight line at Christmas Island as well a s a well worn purple ball cap with white letters VP-872. I am currently employed with Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth Texas, responsible for all flight test support for the F-22 at Edwards Air Force Base. Richard V. Scaffidi, 50, of Roslyn, died April 1 while scuba diving with Buddy Dive Resort. Authorities in Bonaire declined comment on the fatal scuba diving accident and there was no mention of the tragedy in local print media including the Bonaire Reporter. Scaffidi was well-known and respected for his service to the community. For 21 years, he served as lieutenant and captain of the Roslyn Fire Company and was involved in outreach programs to local elementary schools. In addition to organizing various community events including the Fourth of July parade, Roslyn Christmas Tree Event and the Night Out in Abington, Scaffidi founded the swift water rescue program after flooding in the area in 1996. Retired from the U.S. Navy as AMH1 in 1998, he taught classses at Bucks County Community College and served as hazardous materials battalion chief. "If you looked up 'give the shirt off of your back,' there would be a picture of Rich in the dictionary," said Fire Marshal Ken Clark. As a scuba diving instructor with training in CPR and first aid, Scaffidi taught many people to scuba dive including his daughter Angela. "I was certified at 18 after I begged him to," Angela said, "but my mom said she wouldn't do it unless she had gills...he was the greatest man I ever knew and will be very sorely missed in the township." Bill Blackburn, Doyle McEwen, Mark Machin, KC Stangl, Vic Ristvedt, Mick Kohler, Dan Kuper, "Hutch," Wayne Roberts, Dave Jackson, and Luis Rivera come immediately to mind from the crew. Hit NAS Keflavik, Iceland, NAS Adak, Alaska, & NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan. Went to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland for the "NFO at Test Pilot School" thing and then flew P-3 avionics/weapons test projects for 2 years. Served in VPU-2 86-89. It was my best tour, hands down, because of the people I flew with. Joel Walker, John Orem, Mark Ackerman, Rob Leeds, Dwight Shepherd, Rick Fridley & Crew 13. Went on to Monterey, aero, & AEDO. Still on active duty and set to retire this summer. Life's a ride and VPU was a high point. I still have about 98 of the world famous "WARNING - DAY VFR ONLY" stickers since mamasan would not make less than 100 with "#1 special glue." Stuff like that was almost as fun as kicking commie butt. Post facto apologies to Pappy and the boys from VP-50. You were good to us and didn't deserve the heat but I trust there was an up-side in there somewhere. Gotta love covert ops. Cheers to all..." [02MAR2005]

UNGER, Raoul Felix regnu@attbi.com "...Began my Naval career in NAS Olathe, Kansas as a Weekend Warrior. Became an SP2E/H Flight Crew Plane Captain in 1965. I was with what eventually became VP-67 when it moved to NAS Memphis, Tennessee in 1969/1970. I even still have my old VP-67 nametag. I left the squadron around 1970/1971 to go to Costa Rica, C.A. with my Dad. I returned to Florida in 1975, heard about the program at VP-62 and re-afiliated with the Reserves in 1976. I went to VP-30 for FE school and qualified in October 1977. That is when I recalled as a TAR and began my active duty career. I was stationed at VP-62 until 1981, when I transferred to VP-60 in NAS Glenview, Illinois. In 1985 I "moved down the hall" from Cobra country to Lion country and VP-90. In 1992 I returned to Snake country to become a Cobra once again. In 1993 I returned to the Broadarrows of VP-62. Where I was until my health grounded me. I am now stationed at HS-75 and plan to retire in 2000. I also have my own financial services, business funding and mortgage purchasing company. I would enjoy hearing from old friends, esp anyone who knows Kenny Bell...Transferred to the Fleet Reserve Retired List 1 February 2001. Still reside in Jacksonville, FL..." VILLOTTI, John P. jvillotti01@sprintpcs.com "...It's been a long time since I've talked to anyone from VP-90 other than Grizz. I think about everyone often. After a six year break from active duty I enlisted in the Naval Reserve as an EO in the SeaBees and am currently in NMCB-15, Detachment 0815 out of NMCRC St. Louis. We are attached to the 9th Regiment based out of Port Hueneme (across the street from NAS Point Mugu, California) and after two deployments to Iraq, we are on the schedule for rotation again. I will be taking the Chief's exam this February and after exhausting all options for a commission in the Navy will apply for the LDO program in October 2007. That will be my last chance for gas due to my age and will then finish out my last fours years and retire. My wife Nanci (Jacobs) took orders to Moffitt Field CA after Glenview and after eight years of active duty she also joined the Naval Reserve. She changed rates from PR to SK and is attached to FISC Yokuska main body also out of NMCRC St. Louis. She currently has two years left until retirement..." [02AUG2006]

VOIGT, AT1 Ray rayvoigt@prodigy.net "...I am a Plank Owner in VP-90. I was with VP-90 until my civilian job with IBM, transferred me to Boca Raton Florida. I had been affiliated with NAS Glenview, Illinois and its squadrons off and on since 1964. I served VP-90 as a MAD/Trail, FCO and an IFT in the P2V7 and P-3A and P-3B. I met many great friends in this close nit unit and many I still correspond with and visit with in my travels around the country. VP-90 presented me with the capability of joining the Navy and seeing the world. It was really great and I couldn't have found a better bunch of dedicated guys to do that with. In 1986 I transferred to the Naval Reserve Unit Tiger Tail in Miami and then finally to NAS Jacksonville, Florida and worked in the ASWOC for a short while and was finally transferred to VP-62 as the senior first class and section leader as well as WC-210 Supervisor and transitioned into the P-3C Update 3 III where I finished up with 32 years. Currently I am a member of NARF (Naval Aircraft Restoration Foundation). We work on the restoration of the larger naval aircraft in museums. Not only do we clean up and restore the outsides, but we try to restore the aircraft interiors so that the mission is also preserved..." [07JUN2009]
