I was in the right seat of the aircraft that did the emergency landing on Miyako Jima and share that and several other memories with him and others here at this great website. I was in VA-128, flying the TC-4's, 1976-1979, on the USS Midway 1979-1980, VP-30 as a flight instructor 1981-1982, VP-24 as the operations officer til mid 83, 2 years in the Pentagon, then took over VR-22, NS Rota, Spain, as a direct input CO in August 1985. My final tour was as the navigator on USS Eisenhower from late 1986 til 1988. My final 6 months in the Navy found me TAD to VA42 flying the TC-4C again so I could get current in the air again and become competative for an airline job. It worked-- I'm in my tenth year at Northwest Airlines flying the A-320 Airbus and loving life. I'll be in touch with several guys that I've found on this page. MITCHELL, LT Ralph L. Retired rmitchell@esc5.net "...I came to NAS Jacksonville, Florida as an AEAA spent my first six years in VP-49 from 1976-1982. Transferred to VP-30 as an AE1. Assigned to VP 30 from 1982-1986. Worked the AE shop, went to Material Control and later end my tour as Maintenance Control Day shift supervisor. Was selected to Chief in 1985 and selected to LDO in 1986. After Officer Indoc in Aug 1986, I was ordered to VP-56 as the Maintenance Control Officer and the Material Control Officer. After the NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployment in 1989, I transferred to AIMD NAS Jacksonville, Florida as the Support Equipment Officer. One year later I terminated shore duty for orders to VR-22 in NS Rota, Spain. Two years as the Assistant Maintenance Officer and one year as Department Head, we decommisioned VR-22 in the summer of 1993. My last tour took me to Meridian Mississippi as the Assistant Air operations Officer. For a squadron Maintenance Officer to be able to work at a NAS Base Operations was an enjoyable tour of duty. After 21 years and my selection to LCDR, I retired as a LT. That was a family decision to turn down LCDR and retire. I enjoyed the time that I spent in each duty station and all the good friends that I have remembered. I then did a five year stint flying on C-130's in VQ-4 and VR-22 before returning to VQ-2 as a Radio Op from 1992-1994. After the last Aries 1 plane (Ranger 24) quit flying I became an IFT on the Aries 2 birds until 1997. I am currently an IFT at VP-16. If any of the old whalers want EA-3B pictures, I have the ones of Ranger 17 I took in 1986 while flying aboard the USS Kennedy. We handled mainly mats flights (C-118) out of NAS Norfolk, Virginia. It was great duty until the Cuban Crisis. I remember all the cook-outs we use to have. I had my family with me and we lived in "center bargo" housing area. I was there from 1960 until 1963. Did the 83 NAS Keflavik, Iceland and 84-85 NAS Bermuda deployments. In between I was one of the roommates holding the great house parties out in the country. Left there to go to NS Rota, Spain as a PR-1 in VR-22 and AIMD, then VA-176 in Oceana and the Forrestal. Got out in 89 and went in the Air Force Reserve. Did Desert Storm, and now I'm a DoD civilian Firefighter/EMT working with the Crash Crew at NAS Lakehurst, NJ. I hope to hear from some of my old friends.
