On October 5, 2007, the C-9B crew of LCDR Edmonds, LCDR Young, AM2 Harn, AM2 Clingman, AD2 Fernandez, and AW1 Cundy, flew aircraft bureau number 161266 from NAS Atlanta to NAS Key West. During this historic flight, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron FOUR-SIX (VR-46) officially logged its 100,000th mishap-free, C-9 flight hour. This tremendous milestone caps a very proud history for the NAS Atlanta based squadron.
Originally located at NAS Jacksonville, VR-46 relocated to NAS Atlanta in July, 1972. In February 1985, the last pistondriven C-118 "Liftmaster" aircraft in military service was retired by VR-46 as the squadron transitioned to modern DC-9 jet aircraft.
The Navy's version of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 was engineered with a cargo door to accommodate passengers and cargo. The Navy C-9 can carry up to 90 passengers, seven pallets of cargo or multiple combinations of both. Its maximum takeoff weight is 110,000 pounds and it has a range of nearly 2,500 miles. The crew consists of two pilots, one crew chief, one loadmaster, and two flight attendants.
Unlike the traditional part-time role of Reserve forces, VR-46 provides continual worldwide air logistics support to the fleet. Demonstrating its commitment to joint service, the VR Wing expanded its range of coverage, aligning itself with the Joint Operational Support Airlift Command for scheduling. The Eagles of VR-46 are in a constant state of readiness, regularly deploying to the Mediterranean, Western Pacific and Southwest Asia in support of global missions including Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
This recently achieved flight-hour milestone is attributed to each and every member, past and present, of the hardworking, dedicated and safety-conscious professionals of VR-46. It takes an entire squadron of Maintenance, Operations, Administrative and Safety experts to accomplish a feat of this nature. The Eagles of VR-46 continue to achieve lofty goals each and every day while consistently providing the best possible service to the fleet.

Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 46's history dates back to 1970 and the early implementation of the Naval Air Reserve Force "RESFORON" concept. This concept was undertaken to restructure the Naval Air Reserve so that it could laterally integrate manpower and equipment to augment its active duty counter-parts in time of war. One of the new C-118 squadrons following the 1970 reorganization was VR-50, located at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. In 1972 after further reorganization, VR-50 moved to NAS Atlanta, Georgia, being redesignated VR-54 det. NAS Atlanta, Georgia.
