HORTON, George H GHorton424@aol.com "...I was in VU-4 and my main assignment was to gas aircraft. After serving my time at Chincoteague I was flown to NAS Norfolk, Virginia for separation. I can't remember what plane I was in but it was two motored with a tricycle landing gear just before landing at the NAS Norfolk, Virginia we had to shut down one engine over chesapeake bay when we landed the nose wheel colapsed and the port tire blew out. When the plane came to the stop I opened the blister and jumped out when I tried to stand up my legs just would not do it even though I was not injured. A chief in a jeep came upon me and helped me in the jeep he took me to the chiefs club and gave me a couple of belt of booze and I could now navigate again. I remember we had Culver Cadet Planes and one day the chief took off in one and when he tried to land the gear would not crank down as he approached his landing he knocked about 5 inches off each side of his one bladed prop he looked like a drunken sailor flying around till he finally landed. We were in a PBY and I was reeling out the tow cable for a sock for the fleet to practice with after awhile we felt a shock and saw the sock fall. When I reeled in the cable there was only 50 feet left. We got the hell out of there. I was standing sentry duty on the flight line in the heat of summer but the mosquitos were so bad I stood on a grill where steam was coming out to keep the bugs from getting to me. Boy that was hot..." [08MAR2000]
