"...STONECIPHER, CAPTAIN E. Thomas... (CO VP-56 - Circa 1950)...I regret to inform his old squadron mates of the passing of my father, CAPTAIN E. Thomas Stonecipher Retired, 83, on December 3, 2003, in San Antonio, TX. Dad entered the Navy in 1940 and was commissioned in March 1941. He served as a black shoe officer aboard the USS Altair in the Pacific and Caribbean, attended flight school in 1943 at NAS Dallas, Texas and NAS Pensacola, Florida, and served the rest of the war flying PBM Mariners with VP-215 and VP-204 in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Post-war he served with the Atlantic fleet aviation training unit, with VP-49, and was Commanding Officer of VP-56 in 1955 when it earned the Navy "E." In those later years he was flying P5M Marlins. For most of the rest of his naval career he was in the nuclear weapons program in landlocked New Mexico and Germany, so had to grab what flight time he could get with the Air Force or Army -- and he always marveled at how comparatively easy land planes were to fly and operate! After retiring from the Navy in 1965, he went on to a great second career in youth training programs, but always looked back with profound satisfaction to his years with the patrol squadron Navy. I have a squadron patch from VPB-150, a B/W photograph of the insignia, a couple pictures of a PV-1 or PV-2 bearing the number Y474, and also a few pictures of whom I would assume were his commanding officers. He would have served as either a pilot or flight engineer. He was on active duty from January 1943 until November 1946. He was recalled to active duty in 1951 through 1956, based in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland with VR-1. He was again mobilized in April 1962 in NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts where I believe he was the CO of VR-914. His rank at that time was CDR. CDR McCue had just taken over as CO, his XO, CDR Orrill was the finest men I have ever known. My early period in VP-21 included a cornucopia of different experiences: week aboard the submarine USS Cobbler (SS-344) out of New London, good will visit to Nova Scotia with Canadian ASW forces flying Argus aircraft and an unforgettable experience in northern Maine woods at SERE School. Had squadron assignments as Materials Officer and as Safety Officer. Later, I was fortunate as a young Lieutenant to be designated PPC of CAC-12. Had a crew of young "can do" hard chargers: PP2P LT Letson, PP3P LT(jg) Perine, Tacco LT(jg) Byrd, ADR3 Wells, ADRAN Lukity, AT2 Sternad, AX3 Frey, AO3 Bailey, AX2 Copelin and ATNAN Sommerfeld. We never aborted a flight and CAC-12 got the patrols no one else wanted. My final CO was CDR Mike Johnson, a very fine officer and inspiring leader. I was separated from the squadron in July 1967. FYI - I wrote a book about my Navy experiences called "Two Turning, Two Burning" and includes VP-10, VP-11, VP-23, VP-26, and NAS Brunswick, Maine. Served on CAC1,6, and 10. Did two back to back NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployments, went on the UNITAS tour to South America in between. Would love to hear from any old Shipmates -- especially AW's. What ever happened to Andy "The Gleeper" Breton, Frank ""400hz" Morris, Bill "The Weasel" McCoy, Mark McGinley, Mike "Moose" Ford, John Sorrels, Perry "Chilly" Bonds, and one of the hipper O's, Wes Gleason. Looking back, my P-3 days were some of the most formative years of my life. Only stayed for one tour, but still look back fondly today. In fact, just got my son a toy P-3 for Christmas. If anyone has an extra copy of the cruisebook from 83 -- the one I wrote the stupid poem in the beginning of (or was it the end?) Please contact me. Mine got stolen the day after they were delivered, and I would really like to be able to share some of this stuff with my kids. These days I'm in Chicago, making ends meet as a writer. Watch your Chicago Tribune for occassional articles, and my first book comes out at the end of the year. PS. If you e-mail, please stick something inthe subject line about VP-45 so I don't mistake it for spam and accidentally delete it..." [18FEB99]
