JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (June 5, 2025) Capt. Hamish Kirkland took the helm of Patrol Squadron (VP) 30, The Pro’s Nest, as its 47th commanding officer onboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville, June 5, 2025.
Kirkland relieved Capt. Derrick W. Eastman who assumed command of VP-30 in June of 2023. More than 400 friends, family, and past and present Maritime Patrol & Reconnaissance Force Sailors attended the ceremony.
Kirkland is the son of a career foreign service officer and spent his early years in Australia and Indonesia. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Science degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas.
His operational assignments included service with VP-47, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), VP-45 and VP-9. His shore assignments include Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC), Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS 441), Commander, Task Force Seven Two (CTF 72), Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and 5th Fleet, as well as a previous tour at VP-30 as an instructor pilot.
“The VP-30 staff exemplify professionalism, competency and expertise in their chosen field,” Kirkland said. “From MQ-4C to P8-A, whether in the classroom, simulator, or aircraft, the skills taught here translate directly to operational capabilities our Nation depends upon to win the high-end fight against near peer adversaries.”
Rear Adm. Craig Mattingly, commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, presided over the ceremony.
“VP-30 moves forward today under steady hands, transitioning from one respected and trusted leader to another,” said Mattingly. “This squadron remains galvanized in professionalism, purpose, and the kind of leadership that challenges others to be the difference.”
For exceptional meritorious conduct, Mattingly presented Eastman with the Legion of Merit medal.
VP-30 surpassed 60 years and 582,056 mishap-free flight hours under Eastman who retired following 36 years of faithful and honorable Naval service. The Pro’s Nest also earned multiple honors under Eastman’s leadership, including the Commander Theodore G. Ellyson, CNO Aviation Safety, and Golden Wrench awards.
“During my career, I have worked with an incredible group of devoted professionals, while supporting America’s interests, both at home and abroad.” Eastman said. “I have loved serving my country in this fulfilling manner, and I am encouraged by the impressive men and women who came in behind me to underpin our national defense, fly Navy!”

VP 30 Hosts Annual CAG/NARG
By, Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Curtis D. Spencer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 5, 2025) Patrol Squadron (VP) 30 hosted the Commander's Action Group and Naval Aviation Requirements Group (CAG/NARG), April 29 through May 3, 2025.
CAG/NARG is hosted annually aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville and provides a forum across the global Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force (MPRF) to discuss current operations, programmatic updates and future resourcing requirements.
"This week is about the challenges we face, the growth we experience, the progress we will achieve," said Rear Adm. Brett Mietus, commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group (CPRG). Interoperability is who we are and why we work so well with our partners all over the world."
400 attendees were hosted during 50 events with leaders from the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
"We have recently introduced the P-8A Poseidon aircraft in our fleet," said Republic of Korea Navy Capt. Park Killyong, commander, Maritime Air Group 61. "This time is very important for us as we work on P-8 fleet integration. We want to share in the past, present and future of the MPRA community. The United States is a very important ally and participating in this event goes a long way to align our interests and training."
During the week-long event there were multiple training opportunities, senior leadership panels, roundtable discussions, fleet update briefs, static displays and related engagements including a building dedication ceremony.
The VP-30 Integrated Training Center was renamed the D. Michael Sheehy Training Center amidst the multi-faceted evolution. The dedication highlighted the contributions to the Naval Aviation Enterprise from retired Cmdr. Dondi Michael Sheehy, a Naval flight officer whose career spanned over 20 years with an additional 13 years as the Deputy Director for Plans Training and Requirements where he orchestrated the P3C Orion aircraft to P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft platform transition and ushered in the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) into service.

VP-30 Excels in Aviation Maintenance Inspection
By, Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Curtis D. Spencer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 12, 2025) Patrol Squadron (VP) 30 welcomed the Aviation Maintenance Inspection (AMI) team from Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) to perform an inspection from April 21 to 24, 2025.
AMI is an examination of the effectiveness of an aviation squadron's maintenance department programs and their adherence to Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) standards. These inspections, conducted by CNAF are crucial for ensuring readiness, safety and efficiency.
"I am incredibly proud of our performance during this aviation maintenance inspection," said Capt. Derrick Eastman, commanding officer, VP-30. "Our amazing team of Sailors and civilians performed above Fleet average and the CNAF inspection team reported that VP-30 has a very strong, safe, and effective team. Our score was 93% on the Sailor side and our contractors aced it with a 100%."
Although the duration of the inspection was brief, the work leading up to it was calculated, dedicated and precise.
"Over the past six months, the Maintenance Department, comprising of 240 military and 100 civilian personnel, have made remarkable improvements on their maintenance programs," said Lt. Cmdr. Issac Medina, Maintenance Officer, VP-30. "I couldn't be prouder of the team's final score and our significant accomplishments. At the conclusion of the AMI, the inspection team reinforced what we already knew: VP-30 operates safe, mission-ready aircraft and is fully capable of delivering top-tier replacement pilots and aircrew to the fleet."
The success in the 2025 AMI was not a fluke for the Pro's Nest. It was the only possible outcome from their cohesive excellence and hard work.
"We really are always ready," said Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Temeka Solomon, assigned to VP-30. "We constantly check, double check and triple check everything so that when an inspection happens, it feels easy."

RELEASE #23-03
VP-30 Holds Change of Command
By Lieutenant Andy Coen and Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Curtis D. Spencer, VP-30 Office of Public Affairs
JACKSONVILLE, FL (2 June 2023) Captain Derrick W. Eastman took the helm of the Patrol Squadron THIRTY (VP-30), Pro's Nest, as its 46th commanding officer on 2 June 2023 onboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL.
Eastman relieved Captain Jonathan E. Spore who assumed command of VP-30 in May 2021. More than 400 friends, family, and past/present Maritime Patrol & Reconnaissance warriors attended the ceremony.
Eastman, a native of Phoenix, AZ, joined the Navy in 1989. After enlisting, he served as a Yeoman and deployed twice aboard USS NIMITZ with Strike Fighter Squadron 146. Eastman was winged a Naval Flight Officer after completing undergraduate studies at San Diego State University. He also holds Masters degrees from Norwich University and the Air War College.
Captain Eastman's career includes deployments around the world in support of all major operations conducted in support of American interests. He completed a department head tour with Patrol Squadron FIVE, and later held command of Patrol Squadron FOUR-SIX in Whidbey Island, WA. Ashore, Eastman served at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Task Force 57 in Bahrain, the U.S. Strategic Command, Task Force 72 in Japan, and he is a Joint Qualified Officer.
During his remarks, Eastman stated, "I am in awe at the fantastic collaboration across this staff, in our simulators and classrooms, and in the air aboard that beautiful P-8A Poseidon aircraft. I can attest that we may all be proud of the efforts VP-30 puts forth to effectively train aircrews which are ready to execute the mission anywhere and at any time."
Rear Adm. Adam Kijek, commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, presided over the ceremony.
"Every time I walk into this Hangar, I am amazed at the talent that has amassed within our community and I feel a special sense of camaraderie. VP-30 is the gateway to the Fleet and the gateway to the future," remarked Admiral Kijek.
For exceptional meritorious conduct, Kijek presented Spore with the Legion of Merit medal.
Under Spore's leadership, VP-30 surpassed 58 years and 564,672 mishap-free flight hours and was awarded the 2022 Commander Theodore G. Ellyson Award for Aviation Production Excellence, the 2022 AVCM Donald M. Neal Aircraft Maintenance Award (Golden Wrench), and the 2022 Chief of Naval Operations Aviation Safety Award.
"During my career, I have had the opportunity to work with an incredible group of all-stars," Spore said. "I am filled with immense gratitude for those who have supported me along the way and for those I've had the pleasure of serving with. I am extremely proud of all we have been able to accomplish."
VP-30, based in Jacksonville, FL. is the Navy's largest aviation squadron and is the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS). VP-30's mission is to provide P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft and MQ-4C Unmanned Aerial System specific training to pilots, Naval flight officers, and enlisted aircrew prior to reporting to the Fleet. This year, VP-30 is completing the transition of twelve active-component squadrons and two reserve component squadrons totaling over 5,000 aviators and maintainers from the P-3C Orion aircraft to the state-of-the-art P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol aircraft. VP-30 also continues to be the largest producer of Naval Aviators within the United States Navy and produces aviators from Germany, Norway, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
