FITZGERALD, John E. fitzgerald@pisp.net "...I was in VP-17 from 1980 to 1984 which was the best time of my very short Naval Career. Made the 1980 and 1983 NAS Cubi Point, Philippines deploymnents After VP-17 I went to VT-7 at NAS Meridian, was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and subsequently given a medical retirement. After which I went to school attaining an MS degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. Would love to hear from anyone who served in VP-17 when I did, and especially you ground pounders. I have since lost most of my sight, but I have also managed to attain an associated in Business Administration, a Bachelor's in Human Services Counseling, and a Master's in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling and am job hunting..." I was assigned to the AE shope and I also spent a lot of time in AIMD both at NAS Moffett Field, California and at NAS Iwakuni, Japan during the cruise from August 1973 to January 1974. I transferd to NAS Kingsville, TX in May of 1974 and was assigned to the electric shope in VR-23. I was injured in May 1975 and never recovered in time so I was Medically discharged in February 1977. I would love to make contact with some of the guys that I served with. It was a great time of my live, and I thank CDR Wycoff, where ever he may be, for incouraging me to get my GED while in NAS Iwakuni, Japan on our cruse from January 1972 to August 1972. I have since received my BS from Abilene Christian University and will soon complete my MA at the University of Illinois at Springfield. I am currently working for Bridgestone/Firestone Tire and Rubber as a Controls Engineer. I would not be where I am today if it were not for the great men that suported me and got me through my formative years--ha-ha. I enjoyed this tour on the Rock. VW-11 was great duty. I left VW-11 to VT-23 at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Left there in 1966 for a 3 year tour with VX-6 in NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. I made 2 tours to the Ice and the last year in CHI CHi. Imade chief in VX-6 in 1967. I then left there for NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. I made E-8 in 1971. I then left NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island in 1973 for VP-44. I retired in1976. I went back to R.I. to work for the Post Office retiring in 1999. I now reside in Mesa, AZ..." [15JAN2003]
